The Search for Wisdom Ends Here
Reading books that make you look good is a rotten plan. It doesn’t matter how often I read a classic, no one EVER asks me what I’m reading. I can be sitting at lunch, all virtuous and self-improving, reading an Oprah Book Club selection and nothing happens. I’ve never been menaced by bus, much less hit by one, while carrying a collection of poetry. How do you schedule public notice of your good reading intentions?
The Princess and the Pea
The next morning the princess complains about the terrible night she spent on a lumpy mattress. Hooray, there’s rejoicing all around; she is a true princess and the prince marries her at once. I always thought this was a terrible way to repay someone’s hospitality and that no real princess would ever act so badly. I’ve now seen Paris Hilton work the public for a decade and realize that Hans Christian Anderson was wiser than I knew.
Things Remembered and Chased Down
Here’s another early favorite; ‘Granny’s Wonderful Chair’. It starred a lonely and unappreciated step-daughter and…wait for it…her chair. Apparently her loving Granny had managed to merge into the chair after her death, creating the first and only furniture zombie.
